Help build the regional evidence on insurance in Tropical North Queensland
Insurance affordability and access remain significant issues for households, businesses and strata communities across Tropical North Queensland.
Since Regional Development Australia Tropical North first conducted its regional insurance survey in 2025, cost-of-living and business operating pressures have continued to rise. In our region, these pressures can be compounded by distance, freight and fuel costs, as well as exposure to cyclones, flooding and other natural hazards.
Insurance affects more than household and business budgets. It can influence property maintenance, business continuity, disaster preparedness and recovery, and confidence to invest in our region.
WHY WE ARE GATHERING CURRENT DATA
The 2025 survey received 224 responses and established a regional baseline. Its findings contributed to the Australian Competition and Consumer Commission’s monitoring of the Cyclone Reinsurance Pool and informed broader consideration of insurance conditions across northern Australia.
We are repeating the survey to understand how premiums, excesses, availability and access to appropriate cover may have changed, and what homeowners, landlords, strata communities and business owners are experiencing now.
WHO SHOULD RESPOND?
The Tropical North Insurance Experience Survey is open to:
• homeowners and landlords
• strata communities
• business owners
No specialist knowledge is required. We welcome experiences from across the region, including where insurance conditions have improved, remained broadly unchanged or become more difficult.
BUILDING THE REGIONAL EVIDENCE BASE
National data can identify broad trends, but regional evidence shows how those pressures are experienced across communities with different industries, locations and levels of remoteness.
The information collected will strengthen Tropical North Queensland’s evidence base, support Regional Development Australia Tropical North’s advocacy and help inform place-based decisions affecting liveability, resilience and sustainable economic growth.
This work is consistent with the Tropical North Queensland Economic Development Strategy and Regional Investment Framework focus on resilient communities, liveability and investment informed by local conditions.
Participation is voluntary and anonymous. Responses will be aggregated and reported as general regional findings without identifying any individual or organisation. Regional Development Australia Tropical North will publish and circulate a summary after the survey closes.
