$50 million available for active transport projects
Applications are now open for $50 million in Australian Government funding to support new and upgraded bicycle and walking pathways across Australia.
Tranche 2 of the Active Transport Fund is open to state and territory governments and local councils, with applicants able to seek up to $5 million for projects that support active transport.
Minister for Infrastructure, Transport, Regional Development and Local Government, the Hon Catherine King MP, said:
“The next funding round of the Active Transport Fund is now open, for new or upgraded bicycle and walking pathways across Australia.”
The application-based, merit-assessed program aims to make it easier and safer for people to walk and ride, while supporting healthier and more liveable communities.
Projects supported through the Fund can include new walkways, bicycle paths and shared pathways, together with associated improvements such as signage, speed bumps, kerb ramps and drainage.
“The funding aims to deliver safer active transport networks that promote healthier, more liveable communities,” Minister King said.
The Australian Government established the Active Transport Fund as an ongoing measure in the 2026–27 Budget, committing $500 million in new funding over ten years. This includes $50 million to be delivered each year.
The latest round builds on $100 million already allocated to more than 80 active transport projects nationwide.
The investment also contributes to broader national objectives relating to road safety, sustainable transport and transport emissions.
“This investment also supports national goals aimed at reducing transport emissions, increasing road safety and advancing sustainable, healthy transport options,” Minister King said.
For councils across Tropical North Queensland, the Fund presents an opportunity to improve local walking and cycling connections, enhance safety for pedestrians and cyclists, and support healthier, better-connected communities.
Applications close at 5:00 pm AEST on Wednesday 30 September 2026 and must be submitted through the Reporting and Program Management portal.
