The Cape York Region Package (CYRP) Taskforce and Sub-Working Group (SWG) met on 8 May 2026

to review progress on major transport infrastructure projects across Cape York Peninsula and discuss future priorities for the region.

The Department of Transport and Main Roads (TMR) reported significant progress under CYRP Stage 2, with seven projects now completed, including the Archer River and Saltwater Creek bridges and more than 35 kilometres of newly sealed road along the Peninsula Developmental Road (PDR). Additional PDR projects are expected to commence throughout 2026 and 2027, subject to final approvals.

Members were also provided with an update on the Archer River bridge following major flooding associated with Ex-Tropical Cyclone Narelle. The bridge was submerged for less than 48 hours during peak flood conditions and performed as designed, with inspections confirming no structural damage.

Updates were provided on the Community Access Roads Program (CARP), which is delivering upgrades to key access roads connecting remote communities across Cape York. Several projects have already reached practical completion, while additional works remain underway.

Looking ahead, planning has commenced for a potential CYRP Stage 3. The Queensland Government has committed $60 million towards the next stage of works, subject to funding negotiations with the Australian Government. Discussions focused on future priorities, including further sealing of the PDR and potential infrastructure upgrades such as the Myall Creek bridge.

The full communiqué provides detailed updates on current projects, future investment opportunities, and the ongoing delivery of transport infrastructure to improve connectivity, resilience, and economic outcomes across Cape York Peninsula.
