Pacific Engagement Strategy
Pacific Engagement Strategy: Strengthening Partnerships Across the Region
The Tropical North Queensland (TNQ) region is uniquely positioned to foster strong and meaningful relationships with our Pacific neighbours. Once developed, our Pacific Engagement Strategy will leverage the region’s geographic proximity, shared cultural and historical ties, and economic capabilities to enhance collaboration and drive mutual prosperity.
Why the Pacific Matters to TNQ
Cairns and the wider TNQ region have long been recognised as Australia’s gateway to the Pacific. This strategic position allows us to connect businesses, communities, and governments, creating pathways for economic growth, cultural exchange, and sustainable development. The region’s strengths in aviation, agriculture, education, and marine industries position us as leaders in driving Pacific partnerships.
Our commitment is reflected in key initiatives such as the Pacific Partnership for Prosperity Roundtable, and the Pacific Engagement Technical Working Group (PETWG), established to align regional priorities with those of our Pacific neighbours.
Building on Proven Capability
The Far North Queensland Export Capability Profile, produced by Cummings Economics and Tradelinked/EiiC, highlights the region’s ability to service the Pacific through industries like tourism, education, and resource recovery. Cairns is already recognised as a hub for transnational families, trade, and cultural connections, reinforcing its role as a trusted partner in the Pacific.
Collaborative Strategies
The Pacific Engagement Strategy will be developed in collaboration with Trade and Investment Queensland (TIQ) and aligns with the Queensland Trade and Investment Strategy 2022–2032. These frameworks are essential to identifying opportunities for short-term, mid-term, and long-term initiatives that foster institutional capacity building, infrastructure development, and socio-economic progress.
Key Focus Areas
- Short-Term Initiatives (1-12 months): Strengthening aviation and agricultural links, improving supply chains, and developing resource recovery strategies.
- Mid-Term Initiatives (3-5 years): Addressing health and education gaps while advancing sports and cultural exchange programs.
- Long-Term Initiatives (10+ years): Enhancing infrastructure, fostering regional connectivity, and building sustainable development pathways.
Technical Working Group
The PETWG, comprising experts from RDA Tropical North, Tradelinked/EiiC, TIQ, Cairns Regional Council, Advance Cairns, the aviation sector and the Australian Strategic Policy Institute, plays a pivotal role in driving these strategies. By pooling expertise across sectors, the group ensures that our actions are impactful and aligned with both regional and Pacific priorities.
