Further works to improve and seal the Peninsula Developmental Road (PDR) under the $260.5 million Cape York Region Package are set to begin, with tenders called for one of the 2018 projects.

Tenders will be sought for two road sealing projects in 2018, at Piccaninny Black Soil, about 125 km north of Coen, and the Telecom Tower to Archer River section, about 57 km north of Coen.

According to a Department of Transport and Main Roads spokesperson, the sealing projects form part of the Australian Government’s record $50 billion infrastructure investment, delivering the infrastructure Australia needs to grow and thrive in the 21st century.

“The PDR is being transformed to open up Cape York – we’re building a single integrated road network that’s accessible for everyone and that can be relied upon to support road users and connect remote Cape York communities to regional centres,” the spokesman said.

“From jobs to infrastructure delivery and connecting communities, every kilometre of bitumen laid on the PDR is making a positive difference to the lives of people on Cape York.”
The PDR projects for 2018 will provide employment opportunities for Indigenous and local workers, businesses, suppliers and training providers.

Potential contractors and subcontractors interested in both the Piccaninny Black Soil and Telecom Tower to Archer River projects are being urged to attend the Industry and community Briefing opportunity in Weipa, (weather permitting) on 15 February 2018 to speak to TMR staff about submitting tenders.

Tenders for the Piccaninny Black Soil upgrade and seal project were released on 2 February 2018.

Tenders for the Telecom Tower to Archer River project will be called by the end of April 2018.
