In Cairns last Thursday 22 February 2018 the Federal Minister for Regional Development, Territories and Local Government, the Hon Dr John McVeigh announced the appointment of David Kempton as the new Chair for Regional Development Australia Far North Queensland and Torres Strait (RDA FNQ&TS).

Acting RDA FNQ&TS Chair, Mr Bill Shannon welcomed the appointment stating “I am delighted that David has been selected from a strong pool of applicants to lead the RDA FNQ&TS into the future. Mr Kempton brings a commitment to action, significant legal expertise and regional knowledge to the Chair role.”

Mr Kempton, a lawyer, and former State Assistant Minister for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Affairs, is grateful for the opportunity to guide the RDA FNQ&TS in its regionally collaborative approach to secure economic development outcomes across the region.

“I acknowledge the great work of the previous Chair Allan Dale and will seek to build on the strong foundations of his work.” Mr Kempton.

“My long association with the region including supporting the Cape Indigenous Mayors Alliance, establishing grassroots community and industry engagement groups in the Cape York Region Package with the RDA FNQ&TS, and as an independent advisor to the current Lakeland Feasibility Study, place me in a strong position to make a significant contribution to the region as Chair of the RDA FNQ&TS” Mr Kempton said.

“I am interested in better linkages between infrastructure and industry to get greater economic outcomes particularly in the agricultural space.” Mr Kempton continued.

RDA FNQ&TS CEO, Jann Crase said “I look forward to working productively with Mr Kempton, and the rest of the RDA Committee, to deliver on our core priorities to secure enabling infrastructure across the region, effectively support project development and investment, while addressing key policy issues such as better alignment of assessment and approval processes.”

“I congratulate David on his appointment as Chair and as the continuing Deputy Chair, I anticipate a strong partnership so RDA FNQ&TS can continue to deliver positive outcomes for the region” Mr Shannon concluded.
