The time has come for improvements to be made to the Kuranda Range.

“The importance of the Kuranda Range has been overlooked by governments for too long”, said Regional Development Australia FNQ & TS Chair, David Kempton.

“Access to and from the Tablelands, Mossman and Cape York Peninsula is fundamental to the future growth of Cairns.”

Our agricultural producers are currently negatively affected by constrained access to the port and airport. A key connector in the supply chain, the Kuranda Range is vital to our region’s growers and their markets. It is intrinsic to our region’s agricultural revenue.

Additionally, urgent consideration must be given to the Kuranda Range’s role during times of emergency – as we saw during the 2016 tsunami warning.

“The Kuranda Range is a crucial evacuation route for the people of Cairns to get to safety”, said Mr. Kempton. “It is currently not a viable solution”.
